Pinion gear on pull cord issues

I have a 72 9.5 model 9222m, having problems with
The pinion gear not wanting to engage all the time when I pull the starter
Rope, bought a new pinion but still had the same problem, nothing
Is binding and all is free as it should be . Any ideas on the problem/ solution? Im baffled
 
Yes the spring is in the groove and around the side pin, no I didn't grease it everything is dry
Thought grease would hold grit, grit would bind it up?
 
Friction on that spring is what makes the pinion go up.------It needs to grab slightly.----Therefor no lube of any kind.-----Try bending that spring so it grabs a little more.
 
Just to be clear, you are referring to the spring that kind of resembles a shower
Curtain hook? ...big open end circle with a little neck?
 
How should the fit be between the spool and the bearing head? Mine seems
Pretty sloppy line there should be a bushing in it there is probably .060 slop between
