1978 Mariner 28hp s/n 664L 58139 tach

Need a little help with a sierra tach p/n 61546p.i bought this tach from a marine shop and cant seem to get it to work. I have it set to 6P, the gray wire has 12 volt on it with key on and i dont have a manual for motor yet. Can anyone help with verifying wires from pickup/send?
 
That is how i have it wired. Where is this gray wire coming from exactly, it seems to be changing wire colors somewhere. Need to know where at on motor it should land.

Dat is a Yammy motor...It will need a tach adapter or tach kit(

to make work but both are NLA. And the green wire is the signal not grey.
 
If electric start, behind the key switch plate is a 3 wire sub harness with a yellow(switched 12V), black ground and a green for the tach. You installed the adapter on green & black wire as something about poles is different..20 comes to mind for some reason. A tiny tach may be best option.
 
I guess the shop overlooked the adapter kit, i did buy it based on 28 hp applicationn. Hopefully they will take it back. (130.00). Anyone know what the year would be based off of S/N 664 L 58139. I believe a 77 or 78. Thanks for your help
