Yamaha 8 hp 4 stroke long shaft 2001 F8MLHZ model
problem prop is seized
The motor is not seized it turns freely.
It shifts into forward reverse and neutral freely
But prop will not turn and is siezed.
I just bought it.
Any thoughts on what may cause this or best way to fix?
 
I was able to get prop off. It appears it was stuck to far in but once off the splined shaft it sits on spins freely in neutral. Spins in reverse but forward appears stuck or froze will not turn.
Shifter shifts freely in between forard neutral and reverse.

I have not pulled carrier yet to inspect ill do that today.
For some reason it appears that the safety for starting is not releasing as you cant pull pullstart now.any thoughts on what else may be wrong.
 
It does sound like this may be expensive.----Drained the gear oil ?------Or maybe it was not stored properly ?----Looked for oil at the sparkplugs?---Possibly cylinder full of oil ?
 
In forward or reverse the safety for the pull start will engage. Pull off the pull start top. And spin the flywheel by hand. Or even better pull the lower unit off and operate shift rod by hand try to eliminate the issue of knowing if it's the lower unit or the engine.
Try what racerone says. Pull the spark plugs and check for oil in cylinders
