Cylinder wall stain

Hello

I am in the process of purchasing a Chrysler marine 318 short block - reverse rotation

The engine had been rebuilt

One of the cylinder walls has stains or discolourations - cannot remove

This engine had run very briefly - less than 5 minutes - it was soon discovered that one of the Stringers was totally rotten - too expensive to repair

Any idea on the integrity of the cylinder walls

Thank you

What does the piston look like?

I cannot tell - the short block is assembled

During assembly the cylinders were bored and with new piston rings.

There is no cross pattern visible on the cylinder wall - just what appear to be stains -
no scoring - only one cylinder- What ever it is it is embedded in the cylinder walls

As I stated the engine ran for only about 5 minutes - it must be heat related

I really appreciate your help

Stuart

After 5 minutes of running you should still see a cross hatch pattern in the cyli wall. I would be weary of a proper rebuild.. maybe you could get it cheaper. And inspect for a new rebuild.

Get an itemised list of what was done during the overhaul.
Then you can make a informed decision on the condition of the engine.
Personally I wouldn't touch it.

In post #1, you mention purchasing a rebuilt short block.
Just a friendly FYI.... a short block will be minus cylinder heads, whereas a long block will include cylinder heads.

During assembly the cylinders were bored and with new piston rings.
I presume that you meant new pistons and rings!

As said...... a fresh engine (even after 5 minutes run time) should show the cross-hatching.
How are you viewing this staining if a long block version?
Is it possible for you to post a few photos of this for us?
