Suzuki dt 2.2 won't stop running

My trusty little tender motor just kept on running when I pressed the stop button today.
Naturally thought dodgy stop-switch so I removed it and tested it with a meter and it's OK; infinite resistance un-pressed, zero when pressed which is how I understand a kill switch should be.
There is a blue/red wire coming off the coil to the switch and a black wire coming off the switch to a ground point.
I removed the switch and wiring and the motor still starts and runs.
Oddly there is no resistance between the contact for the blue/red wire on the coil and the ground point with no wiring in place: I would have thought that should only be the case with the stop button connected and pressed.

I must be missing something here!
Any ideas what is going on?

Thanks
