Leakdown test on a 5.7

5.7 with Hurth ZF. What is the best way to prevent the engine from turning over when performing a leak down test?

OK, sounds safer than having someone try to hold it in place with a breaker bar. Now, knowing you are at TDC without going past it will be a trick. Some sources say never turn the engine backwards, but surely backing up a few degrees when you are just past TDC can't cause any real damage. Or can it?
