2001 mercruiser 4.3 engine alignment

Hi all boaters,
Is anyone could advise me on how to do 2001 mercruiser 4.3 engine alignment without alignment tool? Have been in contact with 2 large authorised mercruiser repair shops and both informed me that if outdrive shaft slides easy through a gimbal bearing in to the coupler than i shouldn’t worry about it? Sounds doubtful! Any opinions would be beneficial. Thanks for all
 
Ayuh,....... Buy an alignment bar, they're cheap, 'n a Necessary tool for anybody that works on most I/Os,.....
 
Hi go on the internet get the dimensions and get one turned on the lathe to suit your engine its not a big job 1/2 hour and it will be made. mike
