Help with gear linkage on Mariner 30hp

Hi All,

Engine isn't pumping water after the winter, have done some basic troubleshooting and looks like the impeller.

When I tried to take the bottom section of the outboard off to get at it, the gear linkage is stopping the removal. Normally the gear linkage is connected by 2 x nuts, but instead it's the arrangement shown in the attached picture.

Any thoughts on what I need to do next to get at the impeller?

I could be wrong here but
Look under the power head where it meets the cowling under the carbs inline where the shiftrod is. (Take hood off) should be a plastic clip that snaps on a dowel. Rotate the clip off the dowel.and slide out the clip from the shift rod.

I couldn't see any picture posted
