What is this switch ?

Hi,

I recently acquired and old aluminium boat with a Yamaha 40HP 2 stoke. I believe it's a 1993 model.

I notice this little switch on the side of the tilt trim. It has wires (red and black) attached.

Would anyone know what this is for ?

Thank you!

It is not a switch at all. It is a potentiometer. Three wires. Black, pink and orange.

Known as the trim sender. Tells a trim gauge the position of the motor.

That's it, thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction.
This is my first boat and I'm learning new things everyday...

Ok, so my understanding is that this part is only used to check if the motor is fully up or down.
On mine, the little plastic bit is stuck and doesn't move as the motor is tilt up or down.

Can this cause some problems down the road or can I just leave it as is ?

It is used to indicate the position of the motor from the fully down position (trimmed down or in) up to the point where the tilt function begins. The top of the trim range if you will.

The trim position is not used for any functionality of the motor itself in your specific model.
