Install O-RING or don't install O-RING

On a ALPHA ONE out drive changing the water pump housing, the kit came with a O-RING that would go on top or the drive shaft just under the splines. I,m getting mixed advice on what to do, some say don't install in cause it will cause a leak when putting back the lower unit it crimps up. and others say without it water will rot the splines. So O-RING or NOT?
