Front gear bearing

Does the front gear bearing require a key steel to keep from spinning,I took the gear casing apart to reseal and the bearing didn’t have a key to hold it still, there seems to be a place for one both on the bearing and casing to key them together
 
What motor are we discussing? A generic answer is many use a round dowel pin matching a hole in the bearing. The slots are oil passages. Don't know if this applies to yours.
 
Many , many times have I seen the pin pushed into the upper casing by novice mechanics.------A pin LOCATES the bearing for proper oil flow in the bearing.----A square key is not used.-----If pin is pushed in then it is easy to drill a hole for another pin.------The pin locates the bearing for proper lubrication / oil flow.
