no drive

was just out in the lake, was going ok then gear box neutralised,no forward or reverse, lift leg up put in forward can turn prop clockwise, cannot turn anticlockwise, turns both ways in rev, engine got hot reached 200f fresh water cooled, now when put in forward engine stalls, but ok in reverse, water pump replace at marina, recently, what could have gone wrong,no oil?cannot slip till after newyear us aussies have 2weeks off over christmas,no smell from coupling housing like failed coupling, any idears, thanks

By your description, you have an Alpha drive. If the coupling failed it does not have to smell. Look behind the engine and see if you can see the drive input shaft turning with the engine running. If the shaft is turning problem is in the drive.

thanks for that, shaft turns at idle, also poked a snake camera in bell housing, could not see any flaking bits, but cannot see much as the insertion piece is is pretty well covered by shield on the drive plate,so shaft turns, but no water pump or gears, could be gearing in upper housing failed,is that a common fault,or more lack of lubricant, any way will have boat slipped next week then have o look,

If the input shaft turns and you are NOT overheating then the trouble is in the lower unit or its driveshaft /.prop hub. If you ARE overheating the upper may have run dry and melted the gears smooth.

If what you state is true "so shaft turns, but no water pump or gears" and you have a drive earlier than an Alpha, your lower unit input shaft may be sheared off at the "O" ring groove (not uncommon).

Drained oil from leg 250ml,pulled top cover, gears stripped blue in colour, oil doesn’t evaporate,no leaks, wasn’t filled when water pump done, have discussion with pump repairer tomorrow.

Was this the first trip with the boat after the water pump was serviced? If "yes" then the oil was not filled, if "no" chances may be that you have a leak. Did you pressure test the drive?

have a new leg came in 2 parts, will it be easier to install top housing first then gear box,or assemble on the floor then fit complete unit,i think fitting complete would make the gear lever slide in easier,it is a se106 after market brand, hope it likes to live in salt water.

get some 2 x 4 `s and make a stand. assemble both units ,fill from the bottom SLOWLY until it comes out the top.
install drive. SEI drives hold up just fine

thanks lads, should I splash some anti foul paint into the various voids in the units,eg the gear shift shaft spline in gear box has a brass nut and exposed alloy showing ,needs some protection from corrosion.

Not required but be careful with bottom paint containing copper, will corrode the drive very quickly. A good practice is to keep the paint 1 inch away from the transom housing

had the boat in water a month, done over 1hr running [on hour gauge] started this morning,no water pump, pulled hose from leg to steering cooler no flow.bottom of leg clean, wondering can impeller can deteriate in housing if sitting in warehouse to long between assembly at factory and fitting to boat, any way locked boat and walked away in dismay,

When you put the SEI drive together, did you use the pump that came with it or did you replace it with a Quicksilver pump?

SEI's water pumps that come with the drive are garbage and fail. The rubber impeller will spin around the hub on a pressure pump(first Gen Alpha) and the housing liner will come loose and block off the water passage on a Volume Pump (Gen 2 Alpha).....

just put the drive together as it came in the box, will contact the agent i bought it from to see how warranty works, will be interesting to see what is covered, boat has to be slipped then repaired

So, If the pump is bad, which it will be, You should replace it with an OEM pump not the crap they put on the drive when they sell it to you.

thanks chris, the brass insert had spun in the rubber impeller,i fitted a sierra impeller and housing, works fine now, great warranty, dealer sent another sei brand impeller, next question, how to get the button out of a mercruiser single lever throttle control, fitted it new a few years ago but have since thrown out the instructions that came in the box,it is seized up somehow, rev is ok,push forward selects gear ok but very hard to push after gear selected, need to dismantle and inspect.
