78 Thompson shifter questions

Hello all , I have a 1978 Thompson omc stringer 305 motor / 800 outdrive , I dont know much about the shifter but their's a knob that pushes in and out at the pivot point not sure what its function is , any help would be greatly appreciated
 
Actually I was incorrect. It's in nuetral to start when pulled out. And,when ready to go, push in. It would be in gear so you would be turning over the whole drive assembly when the starter spins. That and the prop would be under power
