Help needed to identify this motor

I recently bought a pontoon boat with a Chrysler outboard motor. I need to identify this motor. I also need a starter I believe as it's really sluggish and is getting very hot while trying to start the motor. I tried to attach pictures but am not having any luck it has 3 cylinders and 3 carbs if that helps. You can email me and I'll send you the pictures that way. [email protected]

Inside the bottom cowl near the front should be a metal tag with model/serial #s.

If not under the power pack(last pic) there is a foundry stamp.
Its a circle with the year in the center of the stamp.
Also under the cover in the mid section there is another foundry stamp.

Being as it has a distributor that makes it a 75/76

The hard starting or turning over: do a compression test FIRST!!
Low comp on 1 cyl. can cause turning over problems.
Then check for spark.
U-tube has good videos of the procedure.

Good compression?
The starters are easy to clean and rebuild.
The lower unit, the bearings can rust and cause drag and make it hard to turn over.

I checked compression #1&#3 both have 85#
#2 has 80#
Is that okay?
Tried cranking it cranked good for the compression test and checked for fire had good fire on all 3 cylinders.
Put it back together and tried to start but starter heated up and lead started to smoke.
I believe that the starter is bad.
I found the model # it's 856X5L
Serial # is 1741
I think it's a 85hp right?
Thanx and God bless you

Picture 002.jpgPicture 004.jpgPicture 001.jpgPicture 008.jpgStarter hot: bad ground on the motor, bad battery cables(check for soft /swollen spots), bad connectors, dirt in the starter.
These pics were from a working starter, didn't work good but was working.

The 85/80# is low but probably the way you did the test or a bad/cheap gauge.
But being as they were all 3 real close to each other.:) That's good!
The reading with a good gauge should be 145-150#

A friend gave me a new gauge from Harbor Freight.
Used it and compared it to my MAC gauge.
MAC read 145# the HF read 96#

Thanx for the info Jerry as a matter of fact I bought the compression tester from Harbor Freight so it probably is around 140# using your comparison. As far as the starter i pulled it apart cleaned it and put it back together it now doesn't work at all so i ordered a new one.Any idea on the model #856X5L would that be a 85hp?
Again thanx for all your help
