TAMD31P Engine Manual - Timing

Hi,

A friend of mine has a boat with a Volvo Penta TAMD31P engine which he had to remove and recondition the fuel injector pump. When he removed the pump it was sent away and upon recieving the timing marks that he put on were cleaned off, now there's no identification to work from.

Is there any good source for re-fitting and timing of this pump?

Also wheres best to source a workshop manual for this engine.

Thanks
Ewan

I think there is only one possibility to connect the injection pump, so never wrong.
It is hehind the raw waterpump.
u can time the pump with a dial but it is best to have a workshop manual by hand, also to know the dail numbers for you specific engine. (1.60mm)
There is also a tool to place the flywheel in a specific position but you can also use a drill for it.
U better get a manual and u need the dial to do the job.
With these items it’s not that hard to do the job;)

Hi,

Ok so we have just removed the engine as it was easier to work on, upon removing the front cover it seems the timing is off, see images. The crankshaft pulley dimple mark never matches the gear above it with the double dimples no matter how many revolutions are done. The larger upper 3rd cog does match as can be seen on the images. We have got a workshop manual now although not very descriptive and easy to follow with limited details.

Put the pump gear in with the dot at 4, than you rotate the pump axle til the 4 bolts correspond.
they are not square and can only fit at one position (red arrow)
Lock the flywheel (with tool or drill)and time the pump as discribed.
You did hopefully not take all the gears off??
All the dots must correspond, 1 dot between 2 dot. Like one dot crankshaft between two dot next gear, next 2 dot with one dot camshaft gear, next one dot camshaft to nr4 pump gear, than rotate pump til 4 bolts correspond.
Pfff hope i make sence, this is not my main language .
Did a few kad44 but it’s mainly the same engine i think.

Hi that's great and I think it makes sense, il give it a go tomorrow.

No gears have been removed yet but I have a feeling that the gears aren't aligned properly are all the dots don't match up upon turning them.
