Which water pump system is better?

Still working on converting the old 1974 318 cui 270 Chrysler to 1977 360 cui engine. The old 318 utilized a double impeller fresh water cooling system and the 360 has single impeller to furnish fresh water with block type water pump (similar to vehicles) to circulate it. I can use either one. Which is better? I would think the double impeller is less reliable.

Yes.... and I'll further this by suggesting that you rid yourself of either, and install a Johnson F5B-9 or F6B-9 crankshaft pump.
If you were to do a search here, you will find several threads whereby a few of the Chrysler guys have gone to the crankshaft pump.

A few other changes may be necessary..... but won't break the boat bank.
This will simplify your system and will bring it into the 21st century!

Here is an old thread re; the Chrysler engine and a crankshaft pump installation.

This member made himself an adapter for crankshaft pump

The benefits of the crankshaft pump over that of a belt driven seawater pump:

No side load belt tension that wears on shaft bearings.
No concerns about belt failure.
Easy impeller removal and replacement.
