Borg Warner V drive. gear lash.

Hi guys I have a Borgwarner v drive in my boat and i'm doing the prop shafts and noticed some play at the coupling. It works fine but has about 1/4" of play in the gears. I have the 1.5 gear reduction. the flange is tight on the splines I guess the word is gear lash. I'm wondering if its normal or excessive. I cant seem to find a spec. Any help would be great as now is the time to address while its out of the water.

If by lash you mean the output shaft will rotate about a 1/4" before you can feel a change in the resistance required to rotate it, I'd be inclined to say that's excessive. Looking thru the manual, the gears are shimmed and appear to be fairly "tight". The wild card is that some of the V-drive units are chain driven and they could have more lash.....so, I'd suggest getting the model number and call Hale Marine....they are the velvet drive wizards.....
