1982 40 HP Johnson

Hey there Im trying to take the bottom leg off my 1982 40 HP workhorse Manuals are near impossible to find for this model, my problem is I cant release the gear lever to drop the shaft, can anyone help ?

Is there a wee plate on the side of the exhaust housing ??----You might find a disconnect inside there.

you sir are a Legend I didn't realise the that that side plate was part of the exhaust, sincerely thanks so much for your help case closed

Thats the water intake cover that is the commercial version basically a beefed up 35hp motor.

Kim---This cover is on the side of the exhaust housing !!------That is the 40 HP of the early / mid 1970's revived and marketed as a " commercial " model.----Possibly to clear out a lot of surplus inventory !!

So I take it it has the split gearcase then? That would be good to know when ordering parts.

It is nothing but the revival of the 71 to 76 model 40 HP.-----Which was a revival of the 1960 GALE marketed 40 HP motors----A simple design for remote areas and those who want stuff that can be repaired.
