trying to figure out why I have been stranded on water when woodruff key breaks causing engine to die.
Is there some imbalance in the flywheel causing this or is it something in the crankshaft/piston activity?

The key positions the flywheel for spark timing.-------The flywheel is driven by the locking tapers.----Use lapping compound to clean up any imperfections on the tapers.----Install a factory key.-----Make sure tapers are clean and dry.----Torque the nut.

You woke me up when you said flywheel is driven by the locking tapers... I was under the impression the wheel was driven by the key.
Used anti-seize on tapers to make next removal easier.. Wont make that mistake again. Many thanks to all replies.
