Shift interrupter

I have a 3.0 recruiter. My shift interrupted switch was bad I know this by checking with ohm meter. I changed the switch, but still does not cut out the engine. I manually push switch both up and down directions. What could be the cause for this?
 
Bondo, commonly called mercruiter,I think. Could be also mercruiser? Not being hooked up to the negative side of the coil comes to mind
