Suzuki DT 30 - erratic ignition timing

Hello!

I am having trouble with a Suzuki DT-30 (-88) that I bought earlier this summer.

  • WOT gives 4200rpm
  • Rpms fluctuate at full throttle
  • Stroboscope shows that the ignition timing is erratic
  • Sometimes dies at idle
  • Won't start unless 80%> throttle

Currently the engine sits on a Crescent (13ft, 440 lb) and it tops out at 17 knots.

At first I was convinced that the problem was fuel starvation so I changed the fuel pump, checked for cracked hoses.
Bought the engine from a guy that renovates outboarders and he said that he had cleaned the carbs and changed the FF. I have done an inspection and they do indeed look clean.

However, now I'm thinking that it might be the stator or possibly the CDI-unit (both semi-diffucult to get a hold of over here). Checked the timing and it is very erratic, same on all cylinders. Read on the forums that the Suzuki CDI's are pretty bullet proof, so I'm leaning more towards the stator. Sadly I had to head home and there was no time to inspect it.

Has anyone else had any similiar problems with the Suzuki DT models?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

/Erik
