Jackplate needed???

Hi guys,
I recently finished a power-head replacement on my 1972 Evinrude 25 Hp... Now, I have to figure out if I need a jack plate to plane out or not. Aside from taking out on the water to do this, would it be practical to take off my jack plate and test it without it? I have never used this motor with my boat since I bought it with the pistons being blown, took me 1 1/2 years to fix it... I have a 16ft Ouchita V-Bottom that'll have 2-3 normal sized adults in it. Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks.

If you haven't run this boat in the lake yet, try it with both the jack plate on and off and see where you get the best performance.

Jackplates are normally used for very shallow water running on flat bottom or tunnel hull type of boats. If it is already installed on your boat you may as well try it out and see how well it runs with it. If the jackplate has a large setback it may make the tiller position a little uncomfortable if you are using a tiller steered motor.
