1996 Evinrude Intruder blowing 20amp fuse

Hi-was running down the lake and saw rpm gauge drop then all gauges went to zero. Engine still ran ok. But when turned off the eng would not start. Found 20amp fuse blown. Replaced fuse all ok but did not take boat back out.
After a 200 mile tow back home, found fuse
blown again. So it appears I have something
shorting out. Any suggestions where to start.
Engine harness, start switch shifter wiring etc.

Faztbullet-thanks for reply-rectifier was my first choice, but could this blow the fuse while towing. Fuse blew after 200 mile trip. When I got home turn start switch no response-fuse was blown-appears to be in motor wiring?

Have question-when replacing the rectifier-new one eliminates the purple wire.
So do I just put heat shrink over the purple wire. Nothing else has to be done
with the harness?

Thanks boobie
I disconnected the rectifier today but still blowing fuse.
I only had a 15 amp one so not sure if that’s too low.
Then rain came-will continue tomorrow.

Good morning
1)I disconnected the red wire all other wires from the rectifier-
Fuse should not blow-correct?
2)Next I will disconnect the large red connector behind the 20amp fuse
to see if it blows. If it blows is it correct to say the problem is
downstream in the harness or other area?
Any answers are welcome

Thanks Bobbie and faztbullet for your responses.
I Found the problem today-my dash volt meter
holding bracket was shorting out the purple
wire to ground.
