Best years for Johnson/Evinrude V4

I am thinking of putting twin 100's on the back of my 84 Boston Whaler Outrage 22. Right now the boat has a Chevy 350 Mercruisor I/O. My question:. What are the best years for the Johnson/Evinrude V4? I am going to be repairing my transome over the winter - and figured that would be the best time to switch to outboards thanks, Bill

Any of the crossflow V-4 from 1980 to 98 are essentially the same design.-----But these motors have issues with breaking the piston rings.------Get them cheap in need of rebuilding.-----Then rebuild them yourself .-----You will enjoy them then.

Chris, you traitor! I love the 78's and newer. Electric shifts were easy to get you into trouble. They were engineered more for a "perfect world". In other words "over engineered", not unlike some of the Mercurys too. So agreed with Racer but add 78 and 79, I really loved the 85 hp for some unknown reason.
