Neutral Shifter Handle Detent

I don't really feel a "significant" detent for neutral on shiftier handle. On several occasions engine was in gear and didn't start without "playing" with shiftier handle. Very recently mechanic along with outdrive replaced the shift cable (receipt says cable kit - shifter). I have the old shift cable. Comments and any fix procedures appreciated. Thanks

Ayuh,..... Donno what yer expectin',.... If ya got a controller problem, pull it apart, 'n fix, or replace it,.....

Is the neutral detent caused by the shifter handle or the cable? Where do I begin..

Ayuh,.... detent is in the controller, so I'd start there,.....

Curious, which controller do you have? The Merc. 3000 is known to be troublesome.

Sorry the boat's on a lake mooring 100 miles to the north. I was trying to do research (troubleshoot) before I head up.

How do I tell what model the controller is? I did look at the IPB and there a picture of a BRACKET ASSEMBLY, Shift (#807962A15) that falls under my serial. I assume that's the controller shiftier backing plate.

Merc. controllers tend to have the series proudly shown on the helm hsg. The main reason I ask, is controller parts and diagrams can be elusive. So you'll need as much info as possible to find parts when you tear into it.
