Impeller question J50tleuc

I want to change an impeller on a 1997 Johnson 50. I need to disconnect the shirt rod but, I don't see it. I have a manual and it says to disconnect the shift rod screw. I am not sure where it is. Will I need to disconnect the shift and throttle connections to see the screw? I assume its under the front of the engine behind the carbs. The pic in the manual doesn't help much. Need some advice.

I found a cracked hose on the opposite side of the starter. It merges into the VRO pump from the bottom. Does it require a special type of hose or can I use fuel hose from the AutoZone.
