got a 56 evinrude fleetwin 7.5.... impeller went away while motoring so it ran pretty warm...replaced impeller complete with new housing and all and now I am getting water in number 2 cylinder. checked head and replace head gasket. compression is ok...but still get water in number 2 .. I thought I knew a little about this little engine but I am having trouble figuring this one out. could not see any cracks in cylinder. any thoughts would be appreciated.

Check gasket on the exhaust port cover on side of cylinders.

Well I pulled it...could not tell much about the gasket, I could not get it off in one piece..but the plate had a hole eaten in it about the size of a pencil lead.
I guess with the water pump working good it was squirting a stream right into the #2 exhaust port. thanks for the tip...
now I gotta find a replacement plate and gasket.

You were right on.. I went to Lowes and got a sheet of aluminum..specs were good on it. It was 24 guage (just a touch thinner than OEM which is 22 guage). Clamped my cover on it and made one..
Runs like a top and no water in the cylinder.
Thanks for the tip.
