1987 classic fifty backfires and will not crank

This motor was running fine yesterday at the lake after I shut it down to fish awhile and went to crank it again it started for a few seconds then died and would not crank back. After several tries it started to backfire slightly. Any suggestions?
 
Update this motor when cold will crank perfect .i can shut it down for a few seconds and it will crank back perfect. But if I wait 15 minutes it has no fire to spark plugs. Wait about an hour and it will crank right back up. Any help will be appreciated
 
Is your engine running hotter than normal? Could be a heatsink issue,electronics getting overheated then when cooled down work again
