I have a 1962 johnson 18hp fd16a outboard that won't spit water. I've changed the impeller. Put a new thermostat in it. Not to sure what could be causing this. Any input would be greatly apperisacted!

I'll have to try If it doesn't gush water is it that the impeller was put on wrong or the water tube didnt line up correctly when putting the lower unit back on?

Do you have it deep enough in the water? Bulge where the pump is located needs to be submerged before starting motor. "Gush" means a heavy spray being blown out by exhaust relief any time it is running.

Yeah its deep enough in the water. No water besides a drip very so often come out of the exhaust relief where the water gets spit back out

If you get plenty of water at the thermostat pull the head and install a new head gasket. Was there alot of crap on the old thermostat? Get a jug of saltaway after you get good water flow and pour it in the barrel and run the engine a 1/2 hour or so to flush out all the cooling circuits.
