    Default 1988 Johnson SPL 48hp J48ESLCCC Drive shaft shim question.

    Hey you guys!
    Does anyone know if I have to shim the driveshaft on the motor in the title? I don't think there was one there when I took it apart. If I don't what is the worst that can happen. I guess I should ask, how can I tell if I need to shim it?

    What did you take it apart for ?? According to the parts book it does have shims.

    Worst that can happen is you buy a $400 gear set...you need driveshaft shimming tool to know if it needs/how many shims..

    I took it apart because the vertical driveshat bearing disinegrated and then the forward and pinion gears got torn up. \
    It was not a good noise. Anyway, I have the new gears, bearing and some other stuff that got ruined so now I have to figure out how to put it back together.
    This is what I call fun.
