New 9.9 - Delay in spitting water

After starting how long should it take before engine begins spitting. No spit after 1 minute of running in tank. Water intake well below surface of water in tank. I shut it down after 1 minute. The overheating alarm didn't give alert of any problem.

Thanks,
Mark

Telltale should start almost immediately.

The water needs to be over the water pump, which is at the top of the lower unit.

If it is a tiller model, it does not have an audible alarm. It just shuts down.

If motor continues to overheat with water well above the water pump, then it sounds like the water pump may be damaged and would have to be changed.

Here are the instructions for changing the pump.

After sending this I immediately went down to talk to the Honda dealer. He suggested that it was probably water level in tank not high enuff (as you also suggest). After adding an additional 8 inches of water engine spits as it is supposed to.

Thanks for your really prompt and accurate answer.
