1977 mercury 1150 6 cylinder blown distributor cap

I have a 1977 mercury 1150 6 cylinder. The other day my brother was using it and he said he hit a wave and it and made a pop and stalled. Anyway I found out that the pop was probably the hole that it blew in the side of my distributor cap. It also broke the end off the rotor. I was wondering if anyone knows what might have caused this. This motor has been good to me and I want to fix it, but I would like to know what would cause that so that I don't waste the money on the parts to only have it do it again.

Sorry about my delayed response. I really appreciate you taking time to try and help. I've had this boat for about 10 years and it's been very good to me.

Looks like bottom bear failed and rotor hit the contact. Aint going to be cheap to repair unless you go used....

If that bottom bearing is still solid, then the clamp holding the cap on may have loosened, allowing the rotor to hit it and...Kapow!
