    Default 1967 80 v4 missing component

Two male compression joint pipes exist between the heads. The top One has an aluminum pipe that leads back to the carburetor.
the second lower one is open. What is the purpose of the lower one?
It appears to be a crank case ventilation. Does it need a cover or filter?

That is the heat exchanger for the hot air heated automatic choke. Air is drawn through the lower opening, flows through the heat exchanger where it is heated by the exhaust, then proceeds through the pipe to the choke, finally to the vacuum source in the intake manifold.

Nothing is missing. Don't try to out think the engineers by plugging it up.

    Thanks so much!
should there be some sort of small filter over the inlet? I thought I remembered seen some pics of a lawn mower air filter size filter over it.

No, just an open hole. Yeah, I've seen lots of stuff over them. I guess people just can't stand to see an open hole. But the engineers at the factory left it open. The same under-hood air enters that hole as what enters the carburetors' intakes.

When I see one of those air intakes plugged a red flag goes up !----It means the motor was in the hands of someone less than knowledgeable and other things need to be checked.
