1987 230 OMC Loss of Performance/Kills Under Power

I have a 1987 Bayliner 2150 bowrider with a 230 OMC stern drive. While accelerating under load, once 2500 RPM is achieved, the motor will begin to rev up and down by 400 RPM on each side of 2500 RPM violently before completely killing the motor. However, when placed into neutral the motor will maintain and achieve any RMP. The rate of acceleration does not affect the swing/kill when under load. Looking for any suggestions.

Ayuh,..... Sounds like the fuel system is fulla Crud,....

Start with inspectin' the Contents of the fuel filter, 'n go from there,.....

When I had the issue you're describing I ended up (after a thorough going over of the fuel system) making an adjustment to the tension on the carb (QuadraJet) air door Turns out the door didn't have enough tension and would fly open once I got going. I would run and accelerate fine until it suddenly bogged and eventually died around 25 mph or so, drove me nuts for a month. Give it a try.
