    Default Mercruiser 5.7 starter

I bought a mercury 5.7 starter motor online from https://www.hexautoparts.com/new-hig...sdr0031-l.html
I thought I put everything back the right way.I went to start the engine up and the starter never disengaged.I found it's not right one.I need a 4 post and the start I bought is only a 3 post.
Is there any way to fix the problem? Or just send it back to this seller?
    PLEASE HELP

If you spend $38 on a starter, what did you expect? SMH

If by "3 post" you mean the poles on the solenoid, counting the battery & starter terminals then typically the difference between 3 & 4 pole solenoids is that the case is grounded on a 3 pole and isolated on a 4 pole. IOW you should be able to make it work.

FYI...... the starter motor shown above is for the 153 tooth ring gear flywheel that requires the straight across bolt pattern nose housing.
Your Merc 5.7L will most likely be equipped with the 168 tooth ring gear flywheel. If so, it will require the staggered bolt pattern nose housing like the one that you purchased.

Now days it is rather common to see each manufacturer using their own nose housing casting, of which is somewhat unique regarding the bolt bore depth.
Wrong bolts, and they may bottom out prior to properly and fully clamping the nose housing to the cylinder block. This can lead to broken starter motor bolts!
So, no matter which brand you purchase, be sure to get the correct mounting bolt lengths with the starter motor.

How to buy parts Vol. 1:
    A. Find serial number for your engine and drive
    B. Use this site's excellent search function to plug your serial number into the search field
    C. Navigate to the parts diagram page for the general area that you are looking for, i.e: starter
    D. Find part number in diagram
    E. Order part from our hosts (preferred) or do web search for competitor price and order from them. Better yet, tell our hosts that you found a lower price and allow them the opportunity to match it.

Forget about trying to make a 3 post starter work. The extra post is there to power ( assumed you have one) the electric fuel pump while cranking to start the engine. After you let go of the key that post goes dead.

Get the correct starter and spend more than $38.00

As you see, a real honest to goodness marine starter is not $38. The one you show above is probably not marine J1171 rated. This can mean the difference between you blowing the ass end off the boat or not.

They can live as long as your car starters given the proper care and feeding. They need to be kept clean and dry, they just hate getting a bath. They need need to eat lots of electrons to get spinning.

Unless the engine has been replaced, you should see a tag on the engine that has the OEM serial number on it.

...not to be a pain, but if it was just you on the boat, then you would just become another a Darwin Award nominee... however if you have guests, then it's another, quite ugly situation. Your guests, rightly expect some level of expertise and responsibility from you, when they board your boat.
