Mercury 4hp 2 stroke (year?)

How does the gear select linkage connect with the propeller shaft. I can see diagrams for the linkage in the gear housing (drive shaft) but no connection to the propeller shaft. Also on my model there doesn't appear to be a hole for it to fit
