Shift lever comes out

I have 5.5hp Johnson that’s around a 59 model the other day fishing I pulled the shifter lever with a firm tug and now it acts like it’s stripped out and will even pull straight out of the side of the motor. It looks like maybe there’s a pin that holds it together that could have sheared?
 
Yep, betting the screw that holds the inner lever to the shifter shaft has come out or broken off. Whichever, the powerhead has to come off to fix it.
When was the water pump last serviced? This is the opportune time to do it, because the powerhead has to come off for that too.
 
Take it apart for inspection first.------7 wee screws hold the powerhead in place plus a few hoses to disconnect.----Need a gasket / o-ring for top of driveshaft /waterpump impeller etc.
