Identifying serial number on powerhead or ancillary parts?

After having my Mariner 5hp 2 stroke stolen from its mount by an idiot snapping it off at the mount clamp, I am searching for advice on serial numbers.

The plate which is on the clamp has 5M 6E3 419813 on it.
I am needing a corresponding number stamped on the engine or body to give to the Police for identification purposes should they recover it.

I'm thinking that the engine was built in the 80's and the manufacturer would have a method of tracing model/part numbers from a table of recorded lists.
Any advice or help will be much apprrciated.

Your serial number shows the year to be an 1984.
5C ML 6E3-419480 - 6E3-423468 1984

Typically you may find another serial number on one of the many welch plugs of the engine much like you'll see in the following links as examples,

Chances are low Mercury marine factory or dealer will be able to give you much detail regarding this serial number from back then due to the serial number isn't providing the correct model number when searched out...Plus the model number back then usually isn't listed on the engine itself that would be found on the engine if needed.....It's the serial number that's important to have/see when needed.

Hope you get it back and be sure to keep an eye on all the local for sale ads such as Offer-up, craigslist, face-Book sale items within local cities under marine service & boat items.....Good luck.

Thanks for your help.I'll recheck the numbers on the bracket today and let you know if I made an error. If the serial number is somewhere on the engine, where would it be and is it the same number as the mount bracket? Thanks
