2017 250 initial shift setup

Hi Guys, trying to help a non handy mate.

New 250 4 stroke (I assume DF250 as it got mechanical shift/throttle) on a new 7.5m trailer boat.

Standard surface mount suzuki controller.

Absolute pig to select gear and then get back into neutral. Annoying when offshore but very dangerous around wharfs & driving onto trailer.

Ive also noticed lots of lever movement required before throttle starts to move.

Its been like this since delivery 6 months ago, cant go back to boat builder as he is interstate and also a relationship breakdown in the mix. So its never been set up right since day one.

Local Suzuki mech was not able to fix it either. Mate is sick of wasting money on it.

Any tips or advice before I have a go at it, Im pretty good with Mercrusier shift issues, surely there is a service manual procedure I could follow?

Thanks BT I read that manual couple of days ago but could not find any reference to the gear shift cable or controller installation, but the penny just dropped, there isn't a gear cable it relies on throttle movement to engage gearbox??? Am I right?
