I am trying to get info on an 80HP Mercury, ELPTO. Serial no is very hard to read, could be 08920837 or 08320837 or 09320837 or 09920837. No year model displayed on ID sticker. I'm in Australia, which i would think it was probably made here.

MOtor looks in pretty good shape, may have been reconditioned, (outside looks like a respray) but there isn't a trade/shop ticket on it. It backfires when I start it. Also, some oil splatters on top of transom and shelf.

Appreciate advice

Australia serial numbers are typically difficult to find for us in the US and I'm not really seeing much at this time..... Maybe try cleaning up the serial number plate and posting a photo of the number plate and engine to see if maybe it will help some.
 
Ok, will do, thanks. I decided to buy the boat, and took it for its first spin. Motor runs beautifully.

I"m going to partially answer my own question here. According to the mercury serial number guide: http://www.marineengine.com/mfr/mercury_models.html there were only 3 years that Mercury manufactured an 80 HP, 3 cyl two stroke motor. that is, 1987, 1988,1989. However, my serial number is not listed. it is 08930837. there is no way of knowing which of these years this motor was manufactured. It would be good to know so i could properly date the motor. Anyone shed any more light on this?

I'M still unable to pinpoint a year for you on this one bring an Australia number that starts with an 08.

Though Australia's number isn't listed in the service manual index for your 80 HP engine model, the service manual for the 80 hp 3 cylinders suggests the year range to be from 1987 - 1993.

Mercury manual part number 90-13645--2 / 1095 covers;
70/75/75 Marathon/75XD/75 Sea Pro 80/90 (3 Cylinder) 1987 thru 1993 AND 100 & 115 (4 Cylinder) 1988 thru 1993

Could you use something like nail polish to try and carefully clean some of the black stuff off that looks like paint in order to help confirm them numbers.....Depending on the angle you look at the numbers they start to look like they could be a mix of numbers and or letters.....Now i see why you had a list of them to start with. :)

Maybe an overall photo of the engine will help someone know as sometimes the engine decal colors tends to help certain members such as racerone know the year by looking at them.

Testing of adding photos!!

Thanks, for some reason the engine photo didn't want to open earlier but the serial number plate opened.

Hopefully one of the guys might recognize the engine better then I.

One other option to try is search online under ( identifying mercury outboards by color of decals ) as there are a few places that color coordinate the known decals to years made.

The decal which seems to be the same as mine says 1986, perhaps that's the year that they started making them. I was hoping to hone into the exact year.

Hello I also have serial probs I can’t find my numbers anywhere they are 8067920 Mercury marina 50hp 4cyl 2stroke blue line made in Australia..
i need to order a impeller but I don’t know what the order number is for it.

I decided to visit a boat shop nearby. I showed him a photo of the motor, the dude said that parts were available for that motor. he didn't date it cause I only showed him the photo. best way to get an impeller is to pull the old one out and take it to the boat shop and get them to match it, I reckon.:)
