Evinrude timing

After you set the points than find before top dead centre how do you set the rest of it on Evinrude 1971 6hp the stator or timing plate doesn't seem to be adjustable

Don't attempt to overthink it... it'll drive you nuts. Simply do the following on that model................

Simply have the fiber portion of the points aligned with the flywheel key, then set the points so that a .020 gauge will go through but a .022 will not. No need to be concerned about TDC, the timing, whatever.

There are two bolts that hold the throttle cam to the points plate. Loosen them up and line the line on the cam to the follower. Push the cam up to the roller and toghten the bolts. The throttle butterfly should just begin to ppen as mark on the cam passes center of the follower.

Simple terms.------It is called a " magneto "- and points have to open at the correct time to make spark as magnets rotate by the coils.------But the magneto plate rotates to change firing of the sparkplug relative to piston travel.------

??----The 1971 model 6 hp is a wonderful motor.----You set the points to time the MAGNETO !!-----The magneto plate rotates to time the spark to the piston position in the cylinder.-------It is simple and not magic.---You can check timing with a light.----Light will always flash with mark on flywheel between the 2 marks on magneto plate.
