so i understand a short shaft is 15 in and a long 20 in, mine comes out at 17.75, still a short shaft?
also does 361A in the model/engine no denote anything in particular?
thanks people

Japanese motors are about 2" longer than the old OMC and Merc motors of 40 years ago. You have a Short Shaft.
The secondary numbers designate the production run; it doesn't affect servicing.
The C version is good, with better throttle response than the D (lass rotating mass) but parts are getting scarce. Keep the carb in good shape. Empty the bowl any time you won't be running for more than a day or two. Run non E gas, no older than 30 days.

thanks for that, thought as much. good engine except ive munched the gearbox/drive. anyone else had the shifter clutch sticking or the bevel gear prop end [reverse?] sticking on the shaft?

Disassemble and clean. Try valve lapping compound, and then jeweler's rouge to polish. Bevel gear C and the shaft are still available. So is the clutch. You may have gotten some filings that jammed up the gear, or it may have run without lube, seizing it up.
