97 150 Johnson Fast Strike gears grinding

Was the lower unit off for water pump work ?----Was shift rod turned ?-----Has shift rod height been checked ?-----Are you shifting properly?----Do not " granny shift " this motor.----Put it in gear with a quick firm motion of the shift handle !!
 
Chunks are bad.----I believe these lower units are not as strong as older models.---I would take it apart for inspection.----Aftermarket units are available at considerable saving.
