1994 Johnson 60hp shift shaft

I just recently rebuilt the water pum on my 1994 60 hp johnson. While removing the lower unit the shift shaft may have moved. I also forgot what gear i had it in prior to removing it. 2 questions anyone know the length of the shift shaft and what should i do as far as what gear i should put it in. I think it might have been in forward gear. Any help with this woulb be greatly appreciated
 
The only thing i can find in the service manuel is to put it in neutral I don't see anything about the shaft lenght I have tried Google nothing comes up for my motor. Gonna be putting it back together this weekend and go from there. Thanks for the reply boobie
 
Tried changing the wording in Google from lenght to height. found what i needed thanks racerone i never even though of trying that.
