Coil

Is the coil on a mercruiser V8 electronic ignition different than the coil on a chevy V8 electronic ignition?

The older automobile coils would crank on full voltage and, using a resistor, run on a lower voltage. Does the mercruiser engine, which does not have a resistor, crank and run at a different voltage using the electronic control or does it crank and run on the same voltage?

Don't believe Merc ever used that ballast resistor/ alternate circuit starting system, so the coil should always be running on a full 12 volts.

The ballast resistor does not affect spark much of any. After you install the new coil start it up and monitor the coil for heat if it gets hot in short order install a ballast resistor to coil pod only just make sure the ignition is not running on ballast voltage. Go fishing
