Default leaving the engine cover off for extended peroid of time.

I have a mercury 2000 225hp dfi out board. I took it to a shop to get a new thermostat and have him fix a slight miss in idle. He left the engine cover off the engine for 3 to 4 months, March thru July, in the Florida sun and rain. What damage could this have caused ?

Really....Nothing as long as the throttle cover was on.

Really the bigger question is why did such a minimal repair take so long?!?!? Not sure I'd trust a place like that.
