Outdrive Problem?

VP 260A with Aquamatic 250.
When I put her in forward, she starts to move, then as I slide the throttle more she pulls a little harder but not proportional to the rpm increase, then klunk she locks into gear. If I take her down to idle while in gear she does the same slipping thing again as I throttle up, then klunks again. The same thing happens in reverse. Has anyone heard of this problem? She drives but slips below about 900 in forward and reverse even if she was locked in before I throttled down.

To the best of my knowledge, the AQ 260A was never mated to a 250 drive.

A good working cone clutch system will engage smoothly. Once fully engaged, it will not let go.

Photos and perhaps more info would be very helpful.

OK then it's not a common problem...

Here's the 260A. The original motor was a Chrysler Super Bee.

And the Aquamatic 250 outdrive.

The drive didn't have the locking bolt on the cone - I drilled and tapped to be able to use the newer props.

I'll pull the cover and check the linkage - also drain the drive to see what the oil looks like. I do have a 280 V8 drive that I can use if necessary.

OK, being tagged Chrysler, the game changes.
However, that is NOT a 250 exhaust Y-pipe. The 250 transom shield will not accept the 260 style Y-pipe.

That is NOT a 250 transom shield.
The drive is being hung via a 250 main suspension fork.

The drive didn't have the locking bolt on the cone - I drilled and tapped to be able to use the newer props.
By drilling into and threading the prop shaft for the center locking bolt, you have sacrificed the chrome protective plating.
Your locking bolt internal threads are now subject to rusting.

I'll pull the cover and check the linkage - also drain the drive to see what the oil looks like. I do have a 280 V8 drive that I can use if necessary.
If you change out the transmission and/or the lower gear unit and continue to use the Intermediate housing, you must follow the OEM shimming procedure.

Looks like I may have 2 problems?

The outdrive oil looks clean, fresh and full. BUT when I checked the linkage she wasn't firmly clicking into reverse so I adjusted the throw a tad. Now she has a positive click into reverse.

AND, I had been using a long hub Amita+ prop on the Aquamatic 250 drive with the drive stop tucked in all the way. On the last trip I tried the stop in the middle position with the Amita which might have been a mistake? Anyway I have gone back to the true Volvo 14X15 (no cup) vs the Amita+ 15.8X15 (with cup) and will use the middle stop...I'll let y'all know what I find next time out.
