1994 Johnson 4 hp seahorse /Generic questions

What gear oil should I use for the lower unit?
I took the propeller and gear out along with the skeg. I looked up in the exauhst housing and saw a bunch of light brown milky looking oily residue all over the inside and the shaft. Is this normal.
 
Use gearcase lube "HiVis" 80/90w.

Long exhaust housing...... Water flows down that area (cooling)... otherwise the paint would burn off.
 
You could have had a seal leak at the water pump before the mishap causing this deposit. How was the gear lube the last time you checked it? Any water? Your replacement unit should fix the problem. Be sure to anti seize the splines before installing the driveshaft into the crankshaft.
