Evinrude 9.9 4 stroke 2000 E10EVL4SSS fuel supply issue

I use this motor as a kicker on my Sea Nymph GLS 195. The main drive motor is an injected 70 Johnson VRO. Since the motor is injected, I tried running the 9.9 from the in hull fuel tank by swapping the connector and line from big engine to small. The 70 runs fine, but the 9.9 will occasionally starve itself out of fuel. Wondering if its having difficulties drawing the fuel from the in hull tank? As the tank gets emptier, it seems to happen more frequently. Was gonna get a small 3 gal tank specifically for the 9.9--might this be the answer? Would like to use the main one so as not to increase clutter in the boat--but if the remote tank will work--I'm game.
