Help remove steering rod

1996 125 HP Mercury outboard
1996 Starcraft

Stiff steering, so I am in the process of removing the steering rod from the motor, than I will clean and regrease.
However, after loosening the nut, I can't seem to pull the steering rod free from the motor.
I can pull it out a little bit, but there doesn't seem to be enough room to pull it through into the side of the boat.
Suggestions?

I had the same issue a while ago, you have to remove the motor ..... when they fit the motor they actually feed the steering through and then fit the motor .... with the help of a few friends it is not such a crappy job ....
